I would plan the Jardin des Plantes as a campus, not one attraction. Walking the main botanical garden is free, while the Grande Galerie de l’Évolution, Ménagerie and Grandes Serres have their own admissions and schedules.

That distinction matters because trying to buy everything turns a pleasant half-day into a museum marathon. Pick one paid anchor and let the garden connect the rest.

The Muséum’s 2026 schedule lists the garden at 07:30–20:00 from 29 March to 30 September, then shorter autumn and winter hours. Last entry is shortly before closing, and bad weather can close the garden or greenhouses.

I would therefore check the campus on the day rather than assuming the gates stay open until a fixed time year-round.

If I had to choose one indoor attraction, I would start with the Grande Galerie de l’Évolution. It is open 10:00–18:00 except Tuesdays under the current schedule, and the central procession of specimens is the visual hook that works for both adults and children.

It is also a good weather fallback and has strong accessibility information, including wheelchair provision on request.

The Ménagerie is the small zoo inside the garden. Current MNHN guidance lists it open daily, generally 10:00–18:00 through 25 October 2026 before shorter winter hours. I would choose it for families who specifically want animals, not because a Paris itinerary automatically needs a zoo.

Start with the free garden while energy is high, then use one paid anchor around late morning or early afternoon. Add the Ménagerie only if animals are a priority; add the greenhouses only if their live access status and opening day suit you.

The Latin Quarter and Seine are close enough that you do not need to spend the entire day inside the campus.

The mistake here is treating every building as a box to tick. I would come for the garden plus one strong indoor or family attraction, then leave while the place still feels generous rather than exhausting.
